“New Symphony of Time: Opening at the Mississippi Museum of Art

Flier for New Symphony of Time at the Mississippi Museum of Art

The New Symphony of Time an ongoing exhibition which consists of approximately 170 works largely selected from the Museum’s permanent collection, opens this Saturday at the Mississippi Museum of Art. The exhibition features a breathtaking group of artists including: Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Titus Kaphar and a host of others.

Museum curators extracted phrases from Margaret Walker Alexander’s poem “This is my Century: Black Synthesis of Time.” They used those phrases to develop an exhibition that is said to bring about several ideas. Ideas such as “personal and collective memory, history and the connection to place, and the roles artists play in pursuit of civil rights and racial equity.”

Contemporary artwork was acquired through the Museum’s Center for Art and Public Exchange (CAPE). The Community Advisory Council, which is a program directed by CAPE, will “plan programs, identify new artists,…and connect new audiences with the Museum.”

New Symphony of Time opens this Saturday September 7, 2019 but it has a long life ahead of it. “We plan to refresh and change the installation over the years so that the experience continues to invite new stories and perspectives,” said Museum Curator of American Art Elizabeth Abston.
